With this coming up, I thought I would have some fun with this. Class of 1989.
First, where we were in 1989:
The fall of the Berlin Wall
The first episode of the Simpsons
WWW, The World Wide Web was invented
China, bucking the trend, cracked down in Tienanmen Square
The median cost of a house was $120,000
Eggs $1/dozen
Gas about a $1/gallon
Madonna looked far better than Rosanne
Where we would be heading. Who would have thought?
I’d get my first flip phone about 10 years after graduation
in 1994 or so, I got my first computer: a 4MG Mac–my friend upgraded to an 8
Tom Cruise still looks the same
Where the hell is my flying car?
Email became a “thing” around 1994
No computers, to computer rooms at college, to multiple computers in every home
I’m older than my dad was when I graduated. He’s still a pain in the ass. I joined him.
GPS
My first car was 1978 Impala which I got lost in many, many times
What was once punishments for us are now treats: grounded, nap time, and time outs.
My phone now fits over a thousand of my first computer? Probably more–math is still not my strong suit
On a personal level:
I’m 53, my maturity is 14, my back is 76, and my knees go from 43 to 82
From 19142 to 19064 to around the world and then back to 19078
I’ve been in the top 10% and in the bottom 2%.
My graduating class are parents and grandparents
The music we grew up on now plays in elevators
I lost the three people I was closest to in high-school
I founded a national association
FINALLY published my book
I went from enjoying a cup of coffee to becoming coffee’s bitch. I don’t mind.
We went entered the 21st Century. The Computer Age. And the post Aqua-Net age.
This website/blog is now far older than I was when I graduated.

What an amazing perspective on the passage of time. Only you can make growing older funny🤣
Wait until you see what I do with networking. 🙂 But I do find it fascinating. I don’t know if it is like this for every generation, but we did live in momentous times. Just a quick look around at my apartment now boggles my mind if I look at it through the eyes of kid graduating in 1989. There are two computers, three monitors, a 52 inch television that weighs next to nothing, with my smart phone sitting next to me and a tripod to use that smart phone to record videos. Even the light bulbs would have been wonders in 1989. The LED bulb on my desk and the motion sensor one in my hallway. I’m pretty sure the other furniture in my apartment, aside from the bed, is from 1989. Lol.
